Horse and rider energy calculations

Modified on Fri, 3 Jan at 2:18 PM

Equilab provides estimates of the energy that the horse and rider used during each training, as a way to help inform their health.

Horse Energy

These calculations are based on several inputs, including:

  • how much your horse weighs,
  • the weight it has to carry (equipment, and you),
  • the distance/time of your training, and
  • the gaits/speeds at which your horse rode.

You can input the weight of your horse and the equipment it carries at the bottom of its Profile screen in Equilab.

We recommend using these energy estimates as directional guidance on how your horse's training routines impact its energy expenditure. If you want to read more about calculating your horse energy consumption, we suggest reading Nutrition of the Exercising Horse by Markku T. Saastamoinen.

Rider energy

Estimates of rider energy are available to users who have connected Equilab to their device's native health app. These are based on Apple/Android's own calculations derived from the type of activity and the movement of your phone/smartwatch during the ride.

The numbers Equilab presents are just estimates, however, as every person and horse is unique. The energy estiamtes should not be taken as medical advice.
